Walking/Jogging
After finishing my final assessment I discovered that despite the fact that my weight had gone up by three pounds, and my BMI and fat percentage also when up, I was able to cut my time for the 1.5 mile almost in half. I started the semester at a 15:06 minute mile, it took me a whole 22:42 minutes to finish the mile and a half. I knew this wasn’t a good time and I really wanted to be able to run the mile in at least 14 minutes. I pushed myself hard every class and got better and better every time. Half way though the semester I was already at 18:42 minutes for the mile and a half and by the end I finished with a 9:00 minute mile and only took me 14:00 to finish the mile and a half. It was hard to believe how far I’d come but I know that this class made me healthier and happier.
At the beginning of the semester my three goals where to run the mile in under 14 minutes, run the mile without stopping to walk, and to become more flexible and get an 8 on the sit and reach. I am happy to report that I accomplished the first two goals and got within 1 point on the sit and reach. I was able to run a 9 minute mile way better than I was hoping and aiming for. I also ran the entire mile and a half without stopping and walking. It was very very difficult and I had to continually tell myself that I could do it. I would constantly tell myself just one more lap until I’m finished all of them. I was very proud of myself. And although I didn’t get an 8 on the sit and reach I did get a 9 which is 3 points better than the beginning of the year. I know I became more flexible by stretching before and after my runs. I know I reached my goals because I continually pushed myself and told myself that I could do it. I had faith in myself along with determination. Each class I tried to be better and it definitely paid off. It wasn’t easy and I definitely struggled but it was an experience I wouldn’t give up.
When the semester started I was out of shape and had a dislike for running. My body ached and running even one lap straight was difficult for me. But by continually coming to class and trying my best I feel a million times better. Having a health and wellness class made me more aware of what I would eat and how much water I would drink in a day. Before this class I would eat very unhealthy and drank little to no water at all. After having lessons on healthy eating and what to look for on labels I started to eat healthier which made my stomach and whole body feel better. I also started to drink half my body weight in ounces of water. It helped my digestive system and made it easy to run.
Over the course of the semester I learned that fitness isn’t just a physical thing but it is also mentally challenging. I know that I definitely became more physically fit and I became more flexible and strengthened my legs. However the most challenging part was my mental exertion. I learned through this class that I can do incredible things but I have to mentally tell myself I can do it and push myself to my limits. If I had come into the class and slacked off, just walking, I wouldn’t have been able to cut off 5 minutes from my mile.
