Bite Me
Farewell My Love
My dearest Veronica,
If you are reading this I fear the worst has come of me. This is my last letter to you. The hardest letter I will ever write. I put these words down with a heavy and broken heart. My tears make it hard for me to see. All of this is for you.
The Cardians are almost to our gates; I can hear their drums just over the hills. The war will soon be upon us. The men are restless and frightened. They wait for their death to arrive; I can see it in their eyes. However they are already empty, already void of life. The toll of war has been too much on them. We have fought for this kingdom since the day our fathers gave us up as young boys, this has been our livelihood, we don’t know anything else. We were born to die. And this will be our moment, set in stone, part of history. Our deaths will never be forgotten.
But the king. The king has given up. He has all but opened the gate to the enemy. He sits up in his tower hiding from the world, hiding from the mistakes he has made, hiding from the men he has condemned. His greed has only brought our destruction. I once proudly stood by his side, fighting battle after battle in his name. And all for what? Nothing. Nothing at all. He alone has destroyed his own kingdom and his own name. Our great king has fallen and my loyalty will have me fall with him.
I’m starting to believe this is truly the end. Oh how I wish I could see your beautiful face one last time. How I dream of that smile, those rosy red cheeks, and your soft blonde curls. I sit here and imagine your soft lips on my skin and dream of a better place. I picture us together again, walking through the forest and fields like we use to. I reminisce on all the moments we’ve had. I think of them one last time in a hope to live the life I wanted with you. You are all that I have; all that I love. I no longer fight for the kingdom. I fight for you. You are the only thing that keeps me going. I know that one day we will finally be together whether in this life or the next. Know that tomorrow I go into battle with you and only you in my heart and mind. And know that when I fall I die with your name on my lips.
This is my final goodbye. I don’t want to leave this earth; heaven will be empty without you. I love you Veronica. Know that that is beyond true. I would be nothing without you and I am sorry for leaving you in this way. I hope you can forgive me.
I can hear the drum beats get louder as the enemy approaches. It beats to the pounding of my heart. My life is over but I hope your life will begin anew. Live for me. Breathe for me. Remember me.
Yours even after death,
Vladimir
